In April 2018, CANA Advisor’s Jerome Dixon spent a fun-filled, science-inspired day with 300 eighth grade students from local Richmond area secondary schools at the Richmond International Raceway participating in the second annual Speed Into Science event. Speed Into Science uses the science of racing to complement classroom learning and the Commonwealth of Virginia’s Standards of Learning (SOL) requirements.
The event consisted of four stations that were developed by local teachers and RVA STEM to show real world application of motion, chemistry, audio analysis, thermal energy, and friction. RVA STEM is a volunteer nonprofit group that works to inspire, engage, and educate under-served youth in the Greater Richmond, Virginia community in science, technology, engineering and math fields. Jerome Dixon is an RVA STEM executive board member and a passionate STEM and STEAM (STEM with Arts) supporter.
A bonus to this year’s event was Virginia Tech’s School of Engineering sending over their hybrid electrical vehicle team that designed and developed a hybrid version of a V-8 Chevrolet Camaro. A great real-world application demonstrating how a STEM education prepares students for today and tomorrow’s job market.
